John Travolta could be about to join Denzel Washington in the remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. Travolta, riding high after stepping out in drag earlier this year in the musical remake Hairspray, would revisit the role of a subway hijacker played by Robert Shaw in the 1974 original. Washington will play the head of security originally portrayed by Walter Matthau. Tony Scott will direct.

There is not a thing right about any of this.

Denzel Washington stepping in Matthau's shoes, especially that role? Tony Scott directing? Travolta playing anybody in it?

Okay, he's got nothing on Robert Shaw. But it still could be worse.

My mistake. It is worse...

Remake

In 1998, the film was remade as a television movie, with Edward James Olmos in the Matthau role and Vincent D'Onofrio replacing Shaw as the senior hijacker. Although not particularly well received by critics or viewers, this version was reportedly more faithful to the book. It was also devoid of the quirky humor that made the original so memorable.

Yes, the plodding, wizened, world-weary Matthau is going to be replaced by the dashing, debonair Denzel who rescues the hostages by diverting the train into Central Park and proceeding to kickbox all the hijackers to death.

Might as well go all out and have Uma Thurman in Martin Balsam's role.

Sad indeed. Wrong on so many levels. Not an iota of creativity happening in Hymiewood, constant cannabalizing of movies and ideas past.

Next up? Remake of the ANDERSON TAPES. Denzel plays the Sean Connery role with buddies Don Cheadle and Bernie Mac trying to rob a wealthy apartment building against the wishes of mob boss Dennis Farina.
