Viking Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, and other genres that may or may not involve "cookie monster" vocals?

Just trying to get an idea of how many Amon Amarth or Dimmu Borgir fans are here

I like some early "proto" Black and Death metal. Venom, Possessed, Mercyful Fate. The first two or so Obituary and Death albums. As far as contemporary shit goes, Nile is the only group I like. Ithyphallic sucks, though.

Slayer, Pantera, anyone?

Sorry. Never could stand any of it. I have the first few Venom albums, but that was back when they were mostly kidding and trying to out-Sabbath Sabbath.

Once the utterly humorless Scandinavians got into the act, in scary face-paint and leather trousers, dragging poor old Wotan in with them, I clicked the 'off' switch.

..."cookie monster" vocals:lmao:

Haven't laughed that hard in about a week. That Vampir ^ over my head was the last culprit. Thanks to both of you for the stop-smoking reminders.

Hate Forest is the King IMHO of what I now will always refer to as cookie monster vocals. Those without? As for death metal, is there any? Most black metal vocals are more like Nosferatu at stake time. Nya!

I saw Amon Amarth in concert with Children of Bodom last year. 'Twas a great show! I like Dimmu Borgir as well. Saw them at Ozzfest a few years back. But to be honest, I'm not too impressed with a lot of their new stuff. In fact, I think it pretty much sucks. I think the metal bands of the 90s were much more intense. However, I must exclude Finland from this. Everything that comes out of Finland seems to be golden in terms of metal. However, you can't ever go wrong with Burzum!! :beerbang:

New stuff from Dimmu Borgir isn't as bad if you listen to it a couple of times. It's definitely changed but only a bit. Listen to "The Conspiracy Unfolds", "The Foreshadowing Furnace", and "The Sacrilegious Scorn". They sound better over time; they came a long way from "For All Tid" which was still decent but more folk-like. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Children of Bodom's new stuff. The keyboard feels out of place as they try to go for a harsher and darker tone. Their album "Hatebreeder" was the best one, in my opinion. Amon Amarth is my number one band. They seem to have some of the greatest melodies

There really aren't very many Swedish metal bans I don't like.
Black Metal sucks ass, though. I don't care how badass those Norwegian dudes are, because their music sounds like shit.

For Black Metal, it all depends on the song itself. Some bands can have a ton of crappy songs but one or two good ones. I tend to just try to listen to some of the songs over and over and they grow on you.

LOL, Spankmaster Johnny; music = ghey. Reminds me of the line in Shaun of the Dead, where the bloke tells his mate he loves some bird and gets the reply, "Ghey!"

Anywho, I've never heard of most of these groups. Is this the type of music Saxon and Manowar play?

The Exorcist

Never heard Saxon. I guess Manowar (only heard one song) is pretty good. They're in the Viking Metal category as well as Amon Amarth.

Amon Amarth has been my number 1 band for about 3 to 4 years now, even though they got their name from Lord of the Rings.

That's cool but more in a "heavy metal" way, musically. I prefer the more complex classical/martial/epic composition of Graveland.

Ever hear Warhead?

I bought the CD when it came out and met both bands soon thereafter. Honor are reformed skinheads and basically cool blokes. Mr. Fudali (Graveland) is an introverted geek with a vivid imagination.

Sorry 'bout that. I didn't look for Honor on the list, just tossed the link out there for you assuming they'd be on it. Looking elsewhere on the site, it appears the folks who run ANUS don't really consider them metal but "...At heart a rock/punk band with a heavy metal influence (think the best of AC/DC)."

I'm in my 30s and have been listening to metal since I was about 8! I discovered death metal when I was in high school and got into black metal much later, when I was in grad school. I still go to shows and act like a freak in the pit. :rockout:

Black metal, when it's done "right," is probably my favorite form of music. The first time I listened to it I thought it was noise, but after a few listens with an open mind, it really grows on you -- especially if you're basically an angry person with a lot of pent-up aggression. I especially like classically-influenced stuff that mixes "beauty" with ugliness and aggression, if that makes sense. Some of my favorites (all are from Norway except Abigor):

Abigor (from Austria; probably my favorite BM band overall)
Opus IV
Supreme Immortal Art
Nachthymnen (From The Twilight Kingdom)

Emperor
In The Nightside Eclipse -- this is THE quintessential black metal album, IMO
Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Their other stuff is good too, but these two are my favorites by them.

Immortal
Sons Of Northern Darkness
At The Heart Of Winter
Pure Holocaust (good music, but this album's production is barely tolerable)

Gorgoroth
Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam

Mayhem
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (though the "singer" sounds like he's drunk in some parts)
Grand Declaration Of War (experimental album with some GODLY guitar riffs and drumming)
Ordo Ad Chao

Old Man's Child (this is the other band of Dimmu Borgir's guitarist "Galder")
In Defiance Of Existence

1349
Beyond The Apocalypse
Hellfire

As for death metal, there are a lot of bands in that genre that sound kind of the same to me. But do I like the more creative bands that don't simply chug chords on the lowest guitar strings. Some favorites here:

Atheist
Behemoth
Cryptopsy
Death (though they could have picked a better name)
Decapitated
Deicide (first album)
Morbid Angel (if you want to go to heaven, you might want to skip this song (http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/morbidangel/altarsofmadness.html#9)!)
Nile
Slayer
Venom (Possessed is my favorite by them)
Wintersun (AWESOME, though I'm not sure they're really death metal)
Zyklon (esp. their first album, World Ov Worms)

I've only heard a little bit of Amon Amarth, but I thought it was pretty kick-ass. I might have to pick up one of their albums.

And then there are all the "traditional" metal bands. Among these, I like

Black Sabbath (with Ozzy or Dio on vocals)
Def Leppard (yeah, I admit it -- at least up through Pyromania, before they turned gay)
Dio's solo band
Exodus
Gamma Ray
Helloween (their Keeper Of The Seven Keys albums)
Iron Maiden (still kicking ass after all these years)
Judas Priest (especially Defenders Of The Faith)
King Diamond (this band is fucking BRILLIANT, especially on Abigail, Conspiracy, and House Of God)
Megadeth (their early stuff)
Mercyful Fate (similar to King Diamond, and with same singer)
Metal Church (first two albums, eponymous and The Dark)
Metallica (before they became commercial faggots with the infamous "black album" sell-out)
Motorhead (especially No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith and No Sleep At All)
Ozzy Osbourne (everything from the Randy Rhoads years until Zakk Wylde left the band)
Suicidal Tendencies (check out How Will I Laugh Tomorrow...)
