We were having a discussion in class a while back about the 'contenders.' The usual shit - Hilldog, O'Bama, Jewlieani. Ron Paul comes up - who? who the hell is Ron Paul? Ron Paul? Never heard of him, etc etc. Not a single person in the class (myself excluded, but I am also an Internet phenomenon) had even heard his name.

Internet phenomenon.

True, sad but true.

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has raised millions in his bid for the nomination, putting him on par with some of the contenders who are faring better in national polls.

What impact will Ron Paul have on the Republican race for the White House?

He's going to win the nomination.
14,911
He won't win the nomination, but he'll be a big factor by drawing votes in a crowded field.
1,282
He won't win the nomination, but he'll move the conversation on Iraq and other subjects.
551
Not sure.
379
He'll have no impact. He's an Internet phenomenon which won't translate into votes.

Total Vote: 17,404
Not a scientific survey.

What do students know?

Of course most people have not heard of Ron Paul; most people don't pay attention to who is running until just before the election.

Speaking of which:

That's interesting but it doesn't take into consideration that the Republican party is like a old boys club- they're not going to give Ron Paul the nomination and no one can force them to do so.

I agree. Just pointing out however that simply relying on polls is unreliable, and also ignores the extent to which polls can be used to manipulate public opinion.

Nobody expects 7th graders to know who Ron Paul is.

Students vote. Even if the average student is an ignorant dipshit (which the average student is, I can tell you that) Democracy nonetheless invites the ignorant dipshits to choose their leaders. That they don't know who he is tells you that they won't be voting for him. You can also rest assured that old fucks won't be voting for him either, and the AARP demographic is the largest voting block in the country.

I know a lot of people who have even women, but then again I know a lot of geeks...

I think he has a damn good chance of winning New Hampshire, but probably very little in South Carolina. And he needs to win both to get on the road to the nomination.

Actually Otto, South Carolina will be easy.

If we can take New Hampshire, Gov. Sanford will endorse Ron Paul in South Carolina.

Sanford is a hardcore libertarian, Dr. Paul's good friend and on his short list for vice-president.

Yeah, I'm hoping he gets the VP nod.

Wow...

Normally New Hampshire likes mavericks (good or not) but they lose in South Carolina...

Sanford won re-election by ten points in 2006, which as we all know was a terrible year for the GOP.
He's famous for voting with Ron Paul, in congress back in the '90s and he's currently on the outs with the mainstream Republican Party.
Sanford will be leaving office in 2008, so he doesn't care about offending the winning candidate.

With Sanford's endorsement, Ron Paul can take South Carolina.
