"Fips"
Philipp Rupprecht was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1900. In 1920, he moved to Argentina where he became a gaucho and worked on a cattle ranch, but returned to his native Germany after only a few years abroad. He initially drew caricatures for a Social Democratic newspaper, but he soon came to the attention of the National Socialist Gauleiter Julius Streicher, who hired him as a cartoonist on the editorial staff of Der Stürmer. In the next few years, he became famous for his grotesque caricatures of stereotypical Jews under the pseudonym of "Fips"; his most popular work was a children's book entitled Der Giftpilz ("The Poisonous Mushroom"), published in 1938. In 1939, he was conscripted into the Kriegsmarine, but was soon discharged because of his natural talents as a propagandist. In 1945, he was arrested by the Allies and sentenced to 6 years of hard labor. "Fips" was released in 1950, and traveled to Munich where he became a house painter and interior decorator. He died in 1975.
