New Miss Belgium Booed in Antwerp

By RAF CASERT – 1 day ago

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) — Newly crowned Miss Belgium speaks several languages — including French, English and Czech — but it seems that doesn't count for much when she doesn't speak Dutch.

After she failed to answer a question in elementary Dutch and switched to French during Saturday night's competition, 20-year-old Alizee Poulicek was booed by some of the 3,400 fans in Antwerp, the heart of Dutch-speaking Flanders.

In a country that has been without a government for nearly 200 days because of continued strife between Dutch- and French-speaking parties, the beauty queen's linguistic abilities has taken on larger significance.

"Miss Belgium does not speak Dutch," read a headline in the Dutch-speaking Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper Monday.

"Miss Belgium is not 'tweetalig,'" wrote the Francophone paper La Libre, using the Dutch word for "bilingual," to highlight ever-increasing Flemish demands that all Belgians in the public eye should also speak the majority language.

Dutch-speaking Flemings make up 6 million of the 10.5 million Belgians; most of the rest are Francophones, although there is also a small German-speaking community in the east of the country.

After Belgium gained independence from the Netherlands in 1830, French dominated political and economic life. It is only since World War II that Dutch speakers from the north have started turning their demographic dominance into effective power. For the past three decades, all prime ministers have been Flemish, though all also spoke French.

Northern Flanders and southern Wallonia have gained greater autonomy, but many in Flanders still pounce on every perceived linguistic slight.

Poulicek now knows that. The daughter of a Czech father and a Belgian mother, she lives in the French-speaking city of Huy. She spent half her life in the Czech Republic, returning to Belgium just six years ago. Living in the south, she has had little need to speak Dutch.

"I have to try, learn more," she told VRT television in halting Dutch. She continued in French: "I spoke almost no Dutch when I started this adventure."

For Darlene Devos, organizer of the Miss Belgium contest, it could have been a lot worse.

"I don't worry about this too much. It is the least painful thing," she said. "I would consider it different if they had said 'Miss Belgium is an ugly girl.'"

Belgium is one of those accidents of history. I don't even refer to anyone as a Belgian. I either call them Dutch, or Walloon, depending on the obvious.

A grand idea would be if the north became part Holland, and the south attached to France, but no one ever listens to me.

EDIT: I mean Flemings, not Dutch.

In the end, they chose a beautiful native who somehow doesn't speak Dutch. Still many times better than a non-native candidate as is (hopefully "was") the trend. Good to see more of the beautiful natives of original stock.

People in Belgium should all speak English. :disagree:

Belgium is an error. How can Dutch people be expected to support a national representative who does not speak Dutch? stupid 'Melting Pot' degeneracy.

Rather than being the centre of the EU Frankenstein melting pot Belgium should split up into Dutch and French sections.

I agree with merging Flanders into The Netherlands and Wallonia into France. I suspect the only reason that wasn't done at the end of the Napoleonic Wars is due to the Dutch wanting Wallonia (and probably Luxembourg too, as I believe that was also once part of the Greater Spanish Netherlands), and the French wanting Flanders, and since neither side would compromise, "Belgium" was created as a sort of neutral zone, if you will.

Actually, after the Napoleonic wars, Flanders and Wallonia (which had been the "Spanish Netherlands", ie, ruled by the Hapsburgs) were given to the Netherlands. However, neither the Flemish nor the Walloons wanted to be part of the Netherlands, and they revolted against Dutch rule. This resulted in the creation of Belgium as a compromise buffer state; so yes you are correct but originally the plan was for this buffer to be incorporated into the Netherlands. Belgium was a compromise of a compromise.

The Flemings didn't want to be ruled by the Dutch; Flemish is different enough from Dutch to be considered a different language - or a different dialect at least. Also Flemings tend to be Catholic, Dutch tend to be Protestant. The Flemings don't want to be ruled by the French speaking Walloons, but they don't want to be ruled by the Dutch either.

The Walloons don't want to be ruled by the French, for that matter.

I'm sure she'll uphold the ancient traditions of beauty queens and be a fine ambassador for world peace.

All these 'elections' are a setup. These hookers get to know from day one who is going to win and 99% of these 'live' shows have been recorded already. I know a guy that dated a Miss Belgium candidate and he told all of this to us.

It was obvious that half of the candidates could be of foreign origin, 20% of Walloon-monkey origin and 5% of Flemish origin. This is another attempt of the Belgian state promoting anti-racism and Belgian unity like they have been doing for the last two years now.

I'm happy they chose this girl in the end. I thought the other 2 finalists were a niggerbitch and a sandniggerbitch. I think this girl is a very good symbol for Belgium, especially since she speaks no Dutch! But sure, she one hell of a cuty! When Belgium splits she always can come and live with me on the rich Flemish part!:sex:

But she speaks so many other languages: French, Czech, Russian, English, Spanish... LOL, from what I've heard so far my English is way better than hers.

What you say is so right Farkas, I often think it's meant to be that some negroe bitch has to win. WTF are these ugly baboons doing in a race like that. If such creatures really were the most beautiful women of Belgium I would move out of here, turn gay or even asexual.

I don't know why you have to put down those gorgeous girls because you feel that Miss Belgium should be ethnically Belgian. Why can't you just leave it at that? It's not their fault if they were selected, at least in part, on account of the 'diversity' they contribute.

Ok. So your idea is that they shouldn't compete unless they want to be subject to vicious name-calling and juvenile, unsubstantiated attacks on their appearance?

Come on, guys. It's a beauty pageant.

My idea is that they get the hell out of my country and back where they belong, it's not my fault Africa is a terrible place to live but with fleeing it won't get any better. I will stop using these terms as soon as Europe is saved from foreign invaders!

No one will take you serious if you resort to name calling, among other things. You want to "save" Europe from third world immigration? Then don't give the opposition ammo by acting like your parents never taught you manners. Anyone with a sensible view on immigration is painted as a low brow slob because of antics similar to your own. You might as well get a pay check from the ADL.

Did you ever consider it possible that she was Belgian born and raised and Africa isn't her home?

MANGO!

When Belgium has an African-origin beauty queen it is insulting to the Flemish women, it says to the world "Look, our women are so ugly we have to import Foxy Brown here just to compete..":weird: Natives of Africa should represent their own countries in beauty pageants and sports. There has been a few times white women representing African-majority countries. Except for South Africa where there are large numbers of white people, I don't think that is right.

I hate also when some European country imports a runner from Kenya to represent their country in the summer Olympics, it's ridiculous. It's not how these competitions were conceived. A political agenda has hijacked competitions meant for national pride, and use them to promote rootless cosmopolitanism. :disagree:

A leopard cannot change his spots and a dog born in a stable is not a horse.

I never call names in a serious debate with people in real life but here I just say what I feel and what I think, if you or someone else (I'm not saying that you do it) likes negroid women that's fine for you, but in my opinion they are ugly as hell. And of the record, isn't this the place for low brow discussion? De Biertempel... By the way there is no ADL in Flanders and I will never take a pay check from such an organization, I go to college and then get a job and get paid for doing that.

I don't care, even if her ancestors were part of the museum of Leopold II, I still would like to see them where they belong, Africa. It like releasing a wild animal back in its natural habitat, like a lion who lived all his life in a zoo because his grandparents were caught and now may return to nature.

Of course not. I hate people on the Internet who use the argument "I bet you wouldn't say that to my face". The Internet is like one giant electronic bathroom stall where you're free to graffiti whatever you feel like without consequence. No one would expect a free thinking Russian to speak their mind to KGB agents.
