The fact that you get permanent damage to your organs after not eating for a few days seems lost on these people and of course Julian Lee is there cheering it on with his curry space opera self-help bullshit.

I can't be arsed to recover my password but someone should tell him that there is no difference between fasting and starving.

And your credentials as a nutritionist, general physician, or devotee of sports medicine are?

Don't need to be a nutritionist to read articles in the medical field or listen to what your doctor tells you. Some things are common sense

B.S. I fast intermittently. Maybe a few days every few months. It helps reset my metabolism and hormone levels and I don't even lose muscle. The overwhelming majority of doctors know nothing about proper nutrition.

If his "fast" includes the internet, why is he posting on the Phora?

I'll agree that a lot of things can be taken too far.

"I know that there are no general rules of health because there was a gentleman living in New York a few years ago who was one hundred and fifteen; he was the oldest man living in New York; and he was doing quite well. He lived on his own, got around with no trouble, and could deal with everythingthing that came his way. People asked him, of course, 'What was you're diet; what're you eating?' Then he narrowed his diet down: from the ages of ninety to one hundred and fifteen, his diet consisted mostly of three gallons of Thunderbird wine a week, and bread fried in fatback. When they asked him, ' Why don't you fry your bread in bacon?', he said, 'Bacon is too lean.' Here's a man who knew exactly what his body needed, and he lived a rich, full life on what one would think is fucking rocket fuel. And if he'd gone to a doctor, the doctor would've been, 'What the fuck is the matter with you?! You're out of control, Goddammit! You know what? You're gonna have to start eating vegetables.' And he would've, and he'd have been dead in a week!' "

Pasta alla carbonara would be a criminal offense, along with the pastrami and provolone on whole grain that's my breakfast most of the week.

BTW bro, this is what I've been doing lately:

http://www.crossfit.com/

Modified somewhat for my 43 years. The routine is 3 days w/ 1 day rest but that's a bit much for me as are some of the weights/reps. Also, I had to take a month off because of some personal matters (long story). Hopefully I'll be back where I was in another month.

I used to do some of the crossfit stuff when I was trying to lose weight. Now I go a little heavier with these combos (http://www.t-nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1677559), usually 5 sets of 5 two to three times a week in addition to my other stuff.

Also, a month isn't too long, you will definately surpass your previous numbers quickly.

Here's something I had happen the other night:

I was doing 21-15-9 reps of sumo dead lift high pulls, and at the end of the first set, I was EXTREMELY short of breath, as in ready to tear my shirt off and call 911 in a panic short of breath. My extremities were oxygenated fine, able to breathe deep, pulse spiking to 165/min but recovering steadily to 120, not lightheaded. Just an awful sense of constriction in my chest and a very panicked feeling of not able to get enough oxygen. I slowed down for the next two sets and got the same feeling but it didn't last as long.

I rested up and finished my routine fine but holy shit, that was bloody awful. May have had to do with the fact it was late and I had a Red Bull before the workout. Any ideas, coach?

Also, a month isn't too long, you will definately surpass your previous numbers quickly.

Heh. Grandpa is just hoping to maintain but yes, I have enjoyed some modest progress, lost weight, and much stronger knees and low back.

Day 9, btw. He mentions he's overweight, so he might be OK so far but everything I've read says his body is going to be frantically storing calories as fat once he breaks the fast.

I have really gotten into Italian food lately. I'll be in this grind for a while, and then I'll probably go into Southwest/Mexican mode.

If someone wants to avoid food intake for spiritual reasons, they could get the same results if the did eat but ate very small amount of very basic and simple food simply to avoid health problems, not for enjoyment. When one has no money one often must do this anyway. A big bag of 2,000g cardboard-tasting plain Muesli costs only two euros and has enough calories for a few days (maybe 4,000). Add some tepid water, and you're ok. You wont take any enjoyment from eating it that's for sure, but wont get sick or have some other problem from lack of eating too.

I agree. Fasting doesn't require giving up food completely. You just have to lower your food intake and maybe deny yourself of certain foods. I believe that's why you can eat fish during lent.

I don't get this fasting thing. Anorexic girls fast and they don't seem more enlightened.

Dunno, I think you need some protein in there somewhere, though I guess since you're not advocating this long-term I guess it is an okay idea.

Wouldn't want to see what somebody would like after a year of this, though. I'll bet they'd be a mess.

Day 14

I feel that I have caught my second wind. My tongue is clearing and I feel generally ok again with more health and energy and less discomfort. I also feel enlightened. I smell quite badly of rotten fruit.

I actually looked up some things on this. The good news is he's probably generating ketones from burning fat, so he must have been a huge tub of lard to still be doing that after 14 days w/ no food. The bad news, as I understand it, is that his body will sock away every carb that goes in his mouth as fat from now on.

Yea, he has to eat VERY little carbs at a time until his metabolism can build up to accept it again. Gotta love the ever-adjusting human body

But at the same time, the lower your bodyfat the more carbs you can tolerate before storing fat.

As far as your fatass diets go Italian food is far superior to that Mexican shit.
