Exclusive: Mother speaks for first time since child's death
BY KRYSTAN KRAILLER | KKRAILLER@COMMUNITYPRESS.COM

UNION TWP. - She felt like she had to be super-mom and super-administrator.

Talk about it: Why do mothers want to be everything to everyone? And why don't dads feel this way?

Now Brenda Nesselroad-Slaby, the woman at the center of an emotional story about the loss of her 2-year-old daughter, Cecilia, speaks out about that day, and the days that followed. She spoke exclusively with the Community Press.

Nesselroad-Slaby spoke about all the chaos of that morning, saying how much was on her plate for the day. "I put her (Cecilia) in car seat, then put our 5-year-old's stuff in my husband's car, put the juice in my car, and drove down the highway."

Knowing people have been wondering how she could not think of her children that day, she said, "I talked to people at lunch that day about my kids, and it didn't even click." Since Aug. 23, Nesselroad-Slaby has received hundreds of letters from parents expressing they had done the same thing.

She still seems shocked that it happened at all. "I never thought it would happen to me."

When she realized what happened, "All I can remember is complete horror," Nesselroad-Slaby said. "The teacher that found her is a good friend of mine, and it didn't click when she said, 'The baby is in the car.' She said it again, and I just grabbed my keys and ran, and it was chaos from that moment. I will never ... No one can ever imagine what it's like to pull your baby out of the car like that. I knew she was gone. My life will never be the same."

"I love my kids more than life itself. It was a horrible accident ... I don't know how it happened. It will live with me forever," she said.

As to the negative comments pouring in about the day, Nesselroad-Slaby said, "No one will ever be able to understand what happened, because I never will myself."

In her interview with police, Nesselroad-Slaby told investigators, "I was trying to be everything to everybody - and I failed my daughter."

She clarified that statement further. "I felt like I had to be super-mom and super-administrator. I had to be the perfect mom, coming home and having a perfect environment for my kids. Spending time with them, just sitting and playing, cooking dinners because I didn't want to take them to McDonald's, cooking, reading to them, never taking time to myself. I wanted my kids to be incredibly happy, doing whatever they want."

"At the school, there has been recent pressure from last year's test scores, it was alluded to that if they (the staff) didn't fix it this year, our jobs might not be there," she said.

Along with trying to be there for her kids, Nesselroad-Slaby said, "I was working myself to exhaustion to prepare the staff."

Nesselroad-Slaby said in the days since Cecilia's death, she's chosen not to see the media attention. She's received three negative phone calls, but many more with words of encouragement, and hundreds of letters and cards from strangers across the nation showing their support for her and her family.

She also said her family's support system is "huge." Friends stop by the family home to bring them dinner. Friends try to take Nesselroad-Slaby out to lunch or dinner to get her out of the house.

"That's huge for me," she said. "I'm home during the day by myself because our other daughter is in kindergarten, so it's tough."

As far as recovering from this tragic loss, Nesselroad-Slaby said the family called a counselor to work through everything "individually and as a family."

Nesselroad-Slaby said her 5-year-old daughter is doing well. "Allison is wonderful, playing and being a great 5-year-old. She'll say 'Mommy, stop crying. It's a happy day.'"

Nesselroad-Slaby also spoke of her husband, Gary. "He's committed to the family and making it work." She said he wants to make the family unit stronger than ever.

The assistant principal said a way for the entire family to heal was to set up a memorial fund for Cecilia. Nesselroad-Slaby said her husband, parents and in-laws set up the Cecilia Nesselroad-Slaby Memorial Fund for Children, which they hope to eventually turn into a foundation. Right now, any funds donated to the fund will go towards buying playground equipment for schools and parks.

"Cecilia was an incredibly active child that loved to run and play," Nesselroad-Slaby said, explaining how they chose the purpose for the fund.

Eventually, the family hopes to expand their charity to other activities, such as giving books to at-risk children, and helping needy youngsters and families prepare for school.

"My life has always been doing something for kids," she said.

Nesselroad-Slaby wants to go back to work, despite the negative feelings toward what has happened that has spread across the country via national news shows.

"I feel like the staff needs me in that job. I serve a purpose. Kevin (Thacker, Glen Este Middle School principal) and I are opposites, so we complement each other," she said.

Nesselroad-Slaby is not intimidated by conflict that may come from this situation.

"There is conflict every day, this just might be a different kind of conflict. My hope is that it won't be every day. I'm not sure that it's our parents (the parents of children at the school) that are being negative," she said.

"Live for the positive and work through negative - that's what I've done every day at that job. If they would let me, I'd love to go back. I'm a pretty tough cookie. I started a job, I started with a purpose this year, and I don't want to lose that," Nesselroad-Slaby said.

Donations can be made to the memorial fund at Classic Federal Credit Union, 39 Oak St., P.O. Box 488, Amelia, Ohio 45102. Checks should be made payable to The Cecilia Nesselroad-Slaby Memorial Fund for Children.

So this woman kills her child through absent mindedness and manages to succesfully portray herself as the victim. I can only imagine the guilt trips she lays on the remaining kids.

It wasn't like she went gambling and left her kid in the car. She is the one that has to live with this for the rest of her life. That's punishment enough.

The jews are to blame, because they tortured this woman with sleep deprivation.

I'm sure she'll forget about it when things get hectic.

The law in Ohio states that it is not crime if it was an accident.

Although police questioned Nesselroad-Slaby, Clermont County prosecutor Don White decided not to seek an indictment, because Ohio law stipulates that "reckless conduct" must be present.

Leaving your child unattended for 8 hours seems reckless to me.

Strange. I wonder if this killed baby was from the man she is now living with?
