Male transsexual gene link found

Australian researchers have identified a significant link between a gene involved in testosterone action and male transsexualism.

DNA analysis from 112 male-to-female transsexual volunteers showed they were more likely to have a longer version of the androgen receptor gene.

The genetic difference may cause weaker testosterone signals, the team reported in Biological Psychiatry.

However, other genes are also likely to play a part, they stressed.

Increasingly, biological factors are being implicated in gender identity.


One study has shown that certain brain structures in male-to-female transsexual people are more "female like".

In the latest study, researchers looked for potential differences in three genes known to be involved in sex development - coding for the androgen receptor, the oestrogen receptor and an enzyme which converts testosterone to oestrogen.

Comparison of the DNA from the male to female transsexual participants with 258 controls showed a significant link with a long version of the androgen receptor gene and transsexualism.

Testosterone

It is known that longer versions of the androgen receptor gene are associated with less efficient testosterone signalling.

This reduced action of the male sex hormone may have an effect on gender development in the womb, the researchers speculated.

"We think that these genetic differences might reduce testosterone action and under masculinise the brain during foetal development," said researcher Lauren Hare from Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research.

Co-author Professor Vincent Harley added: "There is a social stigma that transsexualism is simply a lifestyle choice, however our findings support a biological basis of how gender identity develops."

Although this is the largest genetic study of transsexualism to date, the researchers now plan to see if the results can be replicated in a larger population.

Terry Reed from the Gender Identity Research and Education Society said she was convinced of a biological basis to transsexualism.

"This study appears to reinforce earlier studies which have indicated that, in some trans people, there may be a genetic trigger to the development of an atypical gender identity.

"However, it may be just one of several routes and, although it seems extremely likely that a biological element will always be present in the aetiology of transsexualism, it's unlikely that developmental pathways will be the same in all individuals."

In the 19th century, we had a male-dominated society, and so (relatively) many women would pretend to be men. Today, we have a female-dominated society, so a number of men pretend to be women. It used to be that a strong, confident, brave male was the ideal. Now its a hot chick.

Scary thing is that I don't think it is done growing at all. I think it is going to become very mainstream, especially in the Americas. There are many internet forums dedicated to tranny ranting and advice seeking, they are typically frequented by confused adolescents who then obtain advice from seasoned homosexual cross dressers intent on increasing the number of active fags. Nobody seems to want to come out and say "whoa kid, that's just a dude in a dress, maybe there's more to life than that." There are doctors who prescribe young men with hormones so they can become more convincing, all they have to do is convince the physician they have a "legitimate" gender identity problem.

It's a little known fact that when Christians arrived in the new world, they found transvestism as an established practice in aboriginal societies. Essentially when a family had too many boys, they would raise one of the boys as a girl to be used essentially as a sexual plaything. Missionaries were appalled by the practice. I think this tradition explains in large part why transvestism is so widely practiced among Latinos.

My wife's paternal grandmother remarried several times and the last guy was a full blooded Native American and he was apparently quite a guy. He already had a son and daughter from a previous marriage. His son did not turn out so well and is currently a homosexual transvestite living behind my wife's grandmother's home in rural Arkansas. He just holes up there in what is essentially a shed behind the house all day, doesn't work, just freebases coke and likely prostitutes himself as he has no real income.

I'm an open minded guy, but transvestism is a disease. It's an aberrant behavior that should not be encouraged by medical professionals. It cannot be "stopped" but the bottom line is that it should not be enshrined as legitimate. It is primarily a product of narcissism and sex addiction and we all know that those are vices, so why is it OK for some homo to give into these things by screaming that he wants to be a lady, when in reality he wants to be able to use his body for personal gain like a woman does?
